Lakeisha “Keisha” Tolbert, MA, RHIA, CHPS, is the Director of Practice Advancement at AHIMA where she is responsible for leading/co-leading Community of Practice (CoP) initiatives. Currently, primary focus is Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and Non-Clinical Artificial Intelligence (NC-AI) CoPs and co-leading Privacy and Access to Health Data CoPs. In this role, she oversees volunteer group projects and resource development focused on advancing the health information (HI) guidelines and practices for our healthcare profession for audiences that include HI Professionals, the broader healthcare community, patients and the general public.
Keisha has more than 22 years of experience in the Health Information profession, holding a variety of leadership and consulting roles in the outpatient and inpatient healthcare settings and has been instrumental in opening new startup HIM Departments in hospitals, surgery centers and clinics. She has expertise in Operational Leadership & Management, Workflow Process & Design, HIPAA Privacy and Security, Information Governance, Coding/CDI, Quality, Risk/Compliance, Medical Staff Credentialing, EMR Implementation, Rev Cycle Integrity along with so much more.
At a national level, she served as a member on AHIMA’s Professional Ethics Committee and a charter member on AHIMA’s Governance Task Force; while at a state level - she served as TxHIMA President and assisted with state advocacy initiatives. Locally, she has also provided support on Collin College’s HIM Advisory Board and has enjoyed helping students navigate through HIM on their path to success by giving them an opportunity to intern, volunteer or even work in her department. Mentoring is her passion, and she continues to grow by expanding her knowledge and awareness with emerging topics and evolving changes in our healthcare field.
